The crisis within the
Peoples Democratic Party has escalated in Oyo State as several political allies of Governor
Seyi Makinde announced their resignation from the party amid widening internal divisions.
The defections, which occurred on Thursday, involved key party figures across different levels of government, with many citing unresolved internal conflict as the reason for their exit.
Those who resigned include former PDP gubernatorial aspirant Olufemi Oguntoyinbo, Special Adviser on Security to the governor Fatai Owoseni, and Chairman of Oluyole Local Government Area Akeem Olatunji.
Others include Deputy Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly Abiodun Fadeyi, and members of the House of Representatives such as Anthony Adepoju, Abass Adigun, and Adedeji Olajide.
Fadeyi confirmed his resignation in a telephone interview, saying the decision was driven by the lingering internal crisis within the party.
Olatunji also attributed his departure to the same issues, accusing party leadership struggles of weakening cohesion within the PDP and limiting effective governance at the grassroots level.
The PDP in Oyo State has remained sharply divided between factions loyal to Governor Makinde and those aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, a split that has continued to fuel tensions within the party structure.
Although some of the defectors are reportedly considering joining the Allied Peoples Movement, none of them officially confirmed their next political destination.
Party sources indicate that more defections may follow as internal disagreements persist ahead of the 2027 general elections, raising concerns over the PDP’s stability in the state.
