PDP Disowns Fake Campaign Posters Featuring Goodluck Jonathan
The Tanimu Turaki faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has described as fake campaign posters circulating on social media bearing the image of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The party made its position known in a statement issued on Saturday by its Interim National Working Committee and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong.
According to the statement, the posters portrayed Jonathan either alone or alongside other notable Nigerians as running mates, while also falsely associating him with different political parties whose logos appeared on the materials.
The PDP stated that Jonathan remains a registered member of the party under the leadership of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, stressing that he personally completed his registration during the recently concluded digital membership registration exercise.
The party further disclosed that the former president confirmed his membership status during a meeting with members of the Interim National Working Committee held on Friday.
The statement said the clarification became necessary because the Electoral Act prohibits and punishes double party registration.
The PDP alleged that some individuals were deliberately circulating the posters and could attempt to fraudulently register Jonathan and other opposition figures in the databases of different political parties.
The party called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and the public to disregard any such activities, describing them as fraudulent and misleading.
