PDP Grants Waiver, Clears Goodluck Jonathan for Presidential Primary

The Peoples Democratic Party has cleared former President Goodluck Jonathan to participate in its presidential primary after granting him a waiver during its screening exercise on Tuesday.

The clearance was announced in Abuja by former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, a member of the Tanimu Turaki-led PDP National Working Committee presidential and governorship screening committee.

Aliyu disclosed the development after the conclusion of the screening exercise, confirming that Jonathan was approved to contest despite not being physically present at the session.

The development follows earlier reports that a faction of the party backed by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde had indicated that Jonathan would be screened on Tuesday as a presidential aspirant.

Jonathan, who was expected to submit his nomination form on Monday, was said to have been absent at the scheduled time of appearance.

The party’s decision effectively places the former president in contention for its presidential ticket ahead of the upcoming primary election, amid ongoing internal consultations within the PDP structure.
