The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has endorsed former Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Alabo Dakorinama George Kelly, as his preferred candidate for the state’s governorship ahead of the 2027 elections.
Sources said the endorsement followed a closed door meeting with key political stakeholders held on Monday in Port Harcourt, where strategies to consolidate political influence in the state were discussed.
George is expected to contest the governorship under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, marking a significant development in the state’s political landscape.
The meeting was reportedly attended by prominent figures, including ex militant leaders Asari Dokubo and Ateke Tom, highlighting the level of consultations preceding the endorsement.
George, described as a loyalist within Wike’s political structure, previously served as Commissioner for Works in Rivers State.
Sources indicated that the move forms part of efforts to maintain Wike’s political relevance in the state despite his current position at the federal level.
The development comes amid a prolonged political crisis in Rivers State, driven by a power struggle between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Wike.
Since assuming office, Fubara has distanced himself from Wike’s influence, leading to divisions within the state’s political structure, including the State House of Assembly and local government leadership.
Efforts by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resolve the crisis have so far achieved limited success, with tensions continuing between both camps.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official confirmation of the endorsement.
