Court Orders INEC to Deregister ADC, Accord Party, Others

Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, Independent National Electoral Commission, to deregister the African Democratic Congress, Accord Party and other political parties over alleged constitutional breaches.

The ruling was delivered on Monday in a suit filed by the Incorporated Trustees of the National Forum of Former Legislators seeking the deregistration of several political parties ahead of the 2027 general election.

However, available reports indicate that proceedings and judgment in the matter had previously been suspended and adjourned indefinitely following a stay of proceedings secured at the Court of Appeal, with a new date for further action yet to be officially communicated.

The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2637/2026, was instituted against INEC and political parties including the ADC, Action Alliance, Action Peoples Party, Accord Party and Zenith Labour Party over alleged violations of constitutional requirements for continued recognition.

The reported development, if upheld through the judicial process, could have implications for political actors seeking elective offices on the affected platforms.

Among those potentially affected are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who is associated with the ADC presidential ticket, and Governor Ademola Adeleke, who is expected to seek re-election in Osun State.
