Crisis Rocks Kwara PDP as Rival Factions Produce Two Guber Candidates

Fresh crisis has hit the Peoples Democratic Party in Kwara State following the emergence of two factional governorship candidates ahead of the 2027 election.

The development has deepened the division within the party, as rival factions continue to lay claim to the authentic PDP governorship ticket in the state.

The faction loyal to former Senate President Bukola Saraki and reportedly aligned with the camp of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike announced Engineer Kale Kawu Agaka as its consensus governorship candidate.

However, another faction led by Mohammed Taminu Turaki produced Ladi Hassan as its governorship flag bearer after a separate primary election held in Abuja.

Reacting to the development, Kwara PDP Secretary, Kayode Abdulrahman, dismissed Hassan’s emergence, describing it as the handiwork of individuals attempting to destabilise the party.

Abdulrahman claimed that Hassan had earlier contested in the PDP governorship primary election recognised by the party but was unsuccessful, insisting that the faction responsible for his emergence was not recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

However, Hassan defended his candidature, stating that he emerged through affirmation during the factional primary election conducted in Abuja.

The emergence of parallel candidates has raised concerns among party members and political observers, who fear the internal crisis could weaken the PDP’s chances in the 2027 governorship election in Kwara State.

Political stakeholders have continued to call for reconciliation between the rival camps, while attention is expected to shift to INEC and the courts to determine which faction and candidate will eventually be recognised as the authentic PDP governorship candidate for the election.
