CVR Phase III: INEC Registers 1.57 Million Nigerians in Seven Weeks
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 1,565,873 Nigerians successfully completed voter registration as of June 26 under Phase III of its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
The commission disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja through statistics released at the end of the seventh week of the exercise, revealing that the figure comprises 620,933 online pre-registrations and 944,940 physical registrations.
INEC, however, noted that the figures remain provisional pending a comprehensive data clean-up, public claims and objections, and verification through the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).
According to the commission, Kano State recorded the highest number of registrants with 118,207, representing 7.55 per cent of the total. Lagos followed with 78,360 registrants, accounting for five per cent, while Delta recorded 76,395 registrants, representing 4.88 per cent.
The commission also announced the temporary suspension of voter registration in Ekiti and Osun states following the conclusion of the Ekiti governorship election and ahead of the forthcoming governorship election in Osun, in compliance with Section 9(6) of the Electoral Act 2022.
The gender distribution showed that women accounted for 821,276 registrants, representing 52.45 per cent of the total, while men accounted for 744,597, representing 47.55 per cent.
INEC said youths between the ages of 18 and 34 dominated the exercise, with 1,082,985 registrations, representing 69.16 per cent of the total. Registrants aged between 35 and 49 accounted for 331,376, or 21.16 per cent, while older age groups made up the remaining percentage.
The commission further disclosed that students constituted the largest occupational group among new registrants, with 384,093 registrations, representing 24.53 per cent. Business owners followed with 333,539 registrations, accounting for 21.30 per cent, while farmers and fishermen recorded 273,627 registrations, representing 17.47 per cent.
INEC also reported that 18,919 Persons with Disabilities registered during the exercise.
The commission urged eligible Nigerians who are yet to register to complete their registration through its online portal or visit designated Continuous Voter Registration centres nationwide to qualify for participation in future elections.
