Democracy Day: Tinubu Urges Youths to Shun ‘Japa’

President Bola Tinubu has appealed to Nigerian youths to remain in the country and contribute to its development, urging them to take ownership of the nation’s future rather than seek opportunities abroad.

Tinubu made the call on Friday during his Democracy Day address, his fourth since assuming office in May 2023, against the backdrop of increasing emigration among young and skilled Nigerians.

Addressing the youth, the President stressed that Nigeria’s future depends on the commitment of its citizens to build and transform the country.

According to him, young Nigerians should invest their talents and energy in the nation by working, innovating, participating in governance and contributing to national development.

The President's appeal comes amid the continued "japa" trend, which has seen many professionals in sectors such as technology, healthcare and academia relocate abroad in search of better opportunities.

Tinubu said his administration remains committed to ensuring that the benefits of democracy translate into meaningful economic opportunities for citizens, particularly young people.

He highlighted initiatives including the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, the National Agricultural Development Fund’s plan to deploy 10,000 tractors over five years and the certification of more than 1,000 small and medium-scale enterprises for export as part of efforts to create jobs and stimulate economic growth.

The President also underscored what he described as the historic responsibility of the current generation, noting that while Nigeria’s founding fathers secured independence and the June 12 generation fought for democracy, the task before today's generation is to secure prosperity for the nation.

Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to expanding opportunities, improving living standards and creating an environment where Nigerians can thrive and achieve their aspirations at home.
