I Never Received Security Votes as Lagos Gov — Fashola

Former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola has said he did not receive security votes at any point during his eight-year administration, dismissing the notion that governors are directly paid such funds.

Fashola made the disclosure on Friday while speaking at a panel session during the June 12 Democracy Day programme organised by The Platform.

The former governor, who also served as Minister of Works, Power and Housing under the administration of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, responded to questions on the role and impact of security votes amid Nigeria's growing security challenges.

Appearing alongside former Senate President Bukola Saraki, Fashola described the suggestion that security votes are paid directly to governors as laughable, insisting that he never personally received any such funds while in office.

According to him, all funds accruing to the Lagos State Government during his tenure were domiciled in the state's Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning.

Fashola's remarks came in response to discussions on the management and accountability of security-related expenditures by state governments as concerns over insecurity continue to dominate national discourse.

Further details on his comments were still being awaited at the time of filing this report.
