Kwara APC Elders Reject Danladi’s Guber Candidacy, Warn of 2027 Fallout
A fresh crisis has emerged within the Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress following the public rejection of Speaker Salihu Yakubu Danladi as the party’s governorship candidate by the APC Elders Caucus.
Addressing a press conference in Ilorin on Monday, the elders said Danladi’s emergence as the party’s flagbearer had triggered concerns among party members and stakeholders across the state.
The caucus warned that the APC risks losing the 2027 governorship election if internal dissatisfaction and concerns raised by party stakeholders are not addressed.
According to the group, its position was not motivated by personal interests but by what it described as concern for the future and electoral fortunes of the ruling party in Kwara State.
The elders stated that while Danladi has the constitutional right to contest for higher office, they are not convinced he possesses the broad political appeal required to unite party members and attract undecided voters ahead of the election.
They further claimed that opposition parties have gained momentum since his emergence as candidate.
The caucus appealed to President Bola Tinubu, APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda and members of the party’s National Working Committee to reassess developments in Kwara State and engage a wider range of stakeholders before taking further decisions.
The elders maintained that their intervention should not be interpreted as rebellion but as an effort to prevent what they described as a looming political crisis capable of affecting the party’s chances in the 2027 governorship election.
