Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Tuesday appealed to protesters demanding the rescue of abducted pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area to remain calm and trust the government's ongoing efforts to secure their release.
Speaking to demonstrators at the Oyo State Government House in Ibadan, Makinde said security agencies were working relentlessly to ensure the safe return of the victims, stressing that the situation required unity and collective support rather than blame.
The governor said the abductors were not acting as rational human beings, describing their actions as cruel and inhumane.
“This is not the time for us to say it is the President, the governor or the local government that should have handled this. This is a time to pull together as one,” he said.
Makinde noted that the perpetrators' actions reflected extreme brutality, arguing that individuals capable of abducting and killing fellow human beings could not be regarded as normal.
Addressing students, teachers, workers and residents, the governor appealed for patience and confidence in the government's response to the crisis.
“I can only appeal to you, all the students, the workers, the teachers. Please have trust in your government. We’re doing our best,” he said.
Makinde also disclosed that security operatives deployed by the Federal Government had been operating in the affected area for the past two weeks and had remained on the ground throughout the Sallah period.
According to him, he has maintained constant engagement with the security teams, holding meetings with them several times daily to review progress and coordinate rescue efforts.
“I’ve had federal government security operatives here for the past two weeks. They spent their Sallah here. I’ve been meeting with them morning, night and sometimes three or four times in a day,” he said.
The governor urged residents not to take actions that could embolden the kidnappers or deepen divisions within the state, warning against narratives that could undermine ongoing rescue operations.
“We shouldn’t provide oxygen to the people that want to see us divided. The response at this time should be to pull together and allow the government to see this through,” he added.
Makinde expressed optimism that the abducted pupils and teachers would be rescued safely, assuring residents that every effort was being made to secure their freedom.
The protest followed growing public concern over the abduction of pupils and teachers during attacks on schools in the Ahoro-Esiele community of Oriire Local Government Area.
