Oyo Govt Alerts Residents to Flash Flood Risk
The Oyo State Government has alerted residents across its 33 Local Government Areas to the heightened risk of flash floods in June 2026, following the High Impact Based Forecast issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, issued the warning on Monday in Ibadan, urging residents to take precautionary measures to safeguard lives and property as the rainy season intensifies.
According to Aderinto, high intensity thunderstorms and heavy surface runoff expected during the month could trigger temporary road overflows and flooding in several communities across the state.
He disclosed that the government had intensified the clearing of critical drainage channels but stressed that residents also have a responsibility to keep drains, gutters and waterways around their homes free of plastic bottles, silt and other waste materials capable of obstructing the free flow of water.
The commissioner also advised motorists and pedestrians to avoid driving or walking through flooded roads, particularly at night, warning that flash floods could be deceptive and powerful enough to sweep away vehicles and individuals.
Aderinto called on residents to support the government's efforts to protect lives and property by adhering to environmental safety guidelines.
He further warned individuals and property developers against unauthorised dredging or construction activities that alter natural water channels or block drainage paths, noting that such actions violate the state's environmental laws and would attract appropriate sanctions.
The commissioner urged residents living in low lying valleys and flood prone communities to take proactive steps by elevating valuable household items, important documents and electrical appliances above floor level to minimise potential losses.
He also advised parents and guardians to keep children and other vulnerable persons indoors during periods of heavy rainfall to reduce their exposure to danger.
Aderinto assured residents that the state government had activated emergency response contingency plans to address possible flooding incidents and encouraged the public to remain calm, vigilant and safety conscious throughout the rainy season.
