Oyo Govt Declares Tuesday Work-Free Day

The Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day to commemorate and celebrate the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448AH.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, who said the decision reflects the government’s recognition of the significance of the Hijrah to Muslims across the state.

According to the statement, the Hijrah commemorates the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622AD, an event regarded as a major turning point in Islamic history.

The state government said the declaration of the public holiday was made as a gesture of respect and solidarity with the Muslim community.

Oyelade urged residents to use the occasion to offer prayers for peace, unity and prosperity in Oyo State and Nigeria.

He also encouraged citizens to reflect on the values and teachings associated with the Hijrah and embrace the spirit of brotherhood, coexistence and collective progress.

The commissioner noted that the Islamic New Year presents an opportunity for reflection, prayer and renewed commitment to peaceful living and community development.

The Federal Government has approved a comprehensive restructuring of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, marking the first major reform of the scheme since its establishment 53 years ago. The approval was granted at the federal executive council meeting held in Abuja on Monday as part of efforts to reposition the NYSC into a skills-focused and productivity-driven institution aligned with the Federal Government’s economic and youth development agenda. The Federal Government has announced that the traditional khaki uniform of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, will be replaced with Adire fabric as part of ongoing reforms aimed at repositioning the scheme and promoting local production. The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed this on Thursday during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, saying the initiative is designed to strengthen indigenous industries and ensure government spending supports Nigeria’s economy.
