Six members of the House of Representatives from Oyo State have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), citing the protracted leadership crisis and internal disputes within the opposition party.
The defections were formally announced on Tuesday during plenary at the House of Representatives, following the resumption of legislative activities after the Sallah break.
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, who presided over the session, read a total of 13 letters from lawmakers notifying the House of their decisions to change political parties.
The Oyo lawmakers who moved from the PDP to the APM are Anthony Adebayo, Adedeji Olajide, Sunday Makanjuola, Oyedeji Oyeshina, Fola Oyekunle and Adigun Adekunle.
In their separate letters, the lawmakers attributed their departure from the PDP to the lingering internal crisis and leadership tussles within the party, stating that the situation had compelled them to seek an alternative political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The lawmakers are widely regarded as political allies of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who recently defected to the APM and subsequently emerged as the party's presidential candidate.
With the latest defections, Makinde's political camp has secured the allegiance of six out of the 14 members representing Oyo State in the House of Representatives, further strengthening the governor's influence within the APM as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
